In Memory of Jake Carier
My 18 year old son, Jacob Carier, died by suicide in 2012. Jakes suicide was completely unexpected. He wasn't sad or depressed. He had plans for his life, plans for the future.
Jake was happy-go-lucky. He was loving and deeply loved. He always had a smile on his face, and he was the first to help anyone in need. But at times, he was also reckless and made rash decisions. Before Jake died, he was having "relationship problems" with a girl. Jake made a very rash, very reckless and very fatal decision.
Suicide shatters. I am living proof of this. My life is now segmented into "before Jakes suicide" and "after Jakes suicide". I pray you never know this pain. I pray suicide never touches your life. I consider myself an average person. But if this can happen in my average life, it can happen in yours as well.
After Jake died, I swore to him that I would help others in his name, in any way I could. I will speak my sons name till the day I die. I will honor Jakes life by doing everything in my power to help another. I will remember my child when I offer my hand to another. And I will be a light in the darkness for others, as Jake had been for so many.
Here are some facts that should terrify you. In the USA, 1 person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes. That's more then 38,000 lives each year.
Since August of 2012, I have personally known 2 youths who have completed suicide, and know of at least 3 attempts of suicide. The attempts were people under the age of 25. I also know of 2 adults since 2012 over the age of 25, who have completed suicide. This is all just staggering and horrifying to me.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". By talking about suicide prevention and depression, this will not encourage suicide! If anything, the awareness may save someones life.
A contribution to the AFSP is a good investment! More than 82 cents of every dollar you donate can be used to:
· Educate the public about mental disorders and suicide prevention
· Fund scientific research
· Promote policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
· Provide programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk, and involve them in the work of the Foundation
· Offer educational programs for professionals

I would appreciate any help you can give. ANY donation amount is appreciated, and every little bit helps. (The amount donated by each person will not be shown, as to encourage donations of ANY amount.)
Won't you please help me, help another?
